What is NSS?
National Service Scheme, Popularly known as NSS is an extension of activities to the higher education system to orient the student youth to community service while they are studying in education institutions, under the agency of Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India. And yes, NSS is led & run by the Central government, but without volunteers, NSS is like a body without soul.
I have just joined NSS as a volunteer of DIBRUGARH UNIVERSITY PG UNIT and in this article I will love to share with readers why I love to be a NSS Volunteer and why other students should join NSS.
NSS Volunteers are often praised by the people & society because of their dedicated selfless work for the society with a motto “NOT ME BUT YOU” Even NSS volunteers are always said to be more active, energetic & conscious about society problems then other students. Yes, it is 99.9% correct but not 100% correct. What I feel is that every student, whether part of NSS, NCC or any other organization or not, is conscious about the society’s problems even if they have all the potential and energy to eradicate these problems from the society. But, the only difference between a NSS volunteer and other students is their state of mind.
So, let us examine in this article “Why some student’s join NSS and others don’t.
WHY YOUTH NOT READY TO CONTRIBUTE FOR SOCIETY?
SWAMI VIVEKANAND stated that youth are the future of INDIA. Yes, it is totally true. Even
Youth have a high level of energy both Physically & Psychologically, but they refrain themselves from contributing to society. We can understand many youth are facing problems like poverty & different family & personal problems and it becomes difficult for them to think beyond their basic needs for sustaining their life.
However, what about the youth who are studying inside a university? Very few students who are intellectual in themselves get a chance to study in university then, Why they are not willing to consciously participate in social and humanitarian activities. So, the problem is not in youth, the problem is in their thought process.
Let us see how the human brain works –
To start any work first the human brain thinks in the form of thoughts, these thoughts become feelings and then these feelings turn into action. Now, suppose a person has negative thought in his mind, this thought will become feelings & even it is sure it will be converted into action and he will get negative result for his negative action, as just like apple can’t grow in mango tree, good things can’t happen to bad people & vice versa– same as if a person thinks positive, his feelings and then action and then result will too be positive. So, the win & lose, the activeness & laziness is in mind. I feel that the only thing that makes NSS volunteers different is their positive thinking i.e. doing something good for others in as many ways as we can, as many ways we can, as many times we can, as long as we can.
So, through this article we entire NSS volunteers will request our youth to change their thinking either from negative or boredom to positive & active and give their helping hands for society.
IS IT NECESSARY TO JOIN NSS FOR WORKING FOR SOCIETY?
Not at all, It is never like that a person has to join NSS to serve people & environmental no. But, even showing a little consciousness can help to serve people. Let’s say; a student found some garbage on the university campus or anywhere, just picking that garbage and putting it into the dustbin will be also a service towards the country.
Furthermore even if somebody doesn’t want to pick up all that waste & garbage from university it’s okay, we NSS members are there to do so, but a greater help will be just to show little consciousness while consuming and throwing garbage into the dustbin rather than in the university campus. These small steps can give us a big result.
As we know NSS has been started in the name of MAHATMA GANDHI JI. He once said “BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT IN THE SOCIETY “ and I feel we NSS members can make this change possible. It doesn’t mean we will not face problems while bringing this change in the society. Yes, we will surely face many problems & adversities. Even I can share this to you that the biggest problem IN between we and change is people with negative thoughts. They tries to discourage us, they laugh at us, argue with us, but at the end we move forward in the name of MAHATMA GANDHI JI who once told “ FIRST THEY IGNORE YOU, THEN THEY LAUGH AT YOU, THEY FIGHT WITH YOU, THEN YOU WIN”. So, we NSS volunteers have not learned to quit. Just think if MAHATMA GANDHI JI and other
Freedom Fighters would have not thought to fight for our country’s Freedom then would we have been free today? Would we have been enjoying all the rights which we are enjoying today? Of course not.
Readers should not think that we NSS volunteers are just praising ourselves. Our message is clear “NOT ME BUT YOU” i.e thinking beyond the self that is for the society. This society is our society, This environment is our environment. This nature and resources belong to us & even we are not at all different from nature. So, we NSS volunteers think it is our responsibility to think, act and feel for our INDIA & WORLD. And, we sincerely, from deep inside our heart, request all the students and youth to come and join us in the path of service not for self but others.
With this note, I thank Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India for contributing financially to NSS. I thank all my colleagues you work intensely as a volunteer in NSS for society.
